- This estimate uses tax year 2026.
- Federal filing status: Single.

How West Virginia taxes a paycheck
West Virginia taxes wages in brackets, 2.11% to 4.58% for a single filer. Each rate applies only to the part of taxable income inside its bracket.
The personal exemption for a single filer is $2,000.
| Taxable income (single) | Rate | Taxable income (joint) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $10,000 | 2.11% | Up to $10,000 |
| $10,000 to $25,000 | 2.81% | $10,000 to $25,000 |
| $25,000 to $40,000 | 3.16% | $25,000 to $40,000 |
| $40,000 to $60,000 | 4.22% | $40,000 to $60,000 |
| Over $60,000 | 4.58% | Over $60,000 |
Federal income tax uses the IRS 2026 brackets and standard deduction. Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 a year and Medicare is 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000.
What the West Virginia figure includes
- West Virginia taxes West Virginia taxable income for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2026 at 2.11%, 2.81%, 3.16%, 4.22% and 4.58% (W.Va. Code §11-21-4j). Married filing separately uses half the bracket widths. The same full table applies to single, joint, head of household and surviving-spouse filers.
- The personal exemption is $2,000 for each federal exemption (W.Va. Code §11-21-16), so $2,000 single and $4,000 joint in this model. There is no West Virginia standard deduction. A dependent claimed as a federal exemption is another $2,000. The $500 exemption for a filer who cannot claim a federal exemption is not modeled.
- West Virginia credits, the low-income exclusion and other modifications in §11-21-12 are not modeled. The starting point is gross wages.

West Virginia paycheck questions
How much is taken out of a paycheck in West Virginia?
On the West Virginia median wage of $45,300 (BLS, May 2025), paid every two weeks, about $306.43 of a $1,742.31 paycheck goes to tax: $125.23 federal income tax, $133.29 Social Security and Medicare, and $47.91 West Virginia income tax. That leaves $1,435.88.
This assumes a single filer with the standard deduction and no pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or health premiums, which would lower both the tax and the check.
Does West Virginia have a state income tax?
Yes. West Virginia taxes wages in brackets, 2.11% to 4.58% for a single filer. Each rate applies only to the part of taxable income inside its bracket. The rules come from West Virginia State Tax Department.
What is the West Virginia income tax rate for 2026?
For a single filer the rates run 2.11% to 4.58%. The bracket table on this page shows where each rate starts.
How much is $1,000 a week after taxes in West Virginia?
About $816.03 a week, or $42,434 a year, for a single filer with the standard deduction in 2026. Federal income tax takes about $78.08 a week and Social Security and Medicare $76.50; West Virginia income tax about $29.40.
Why is my real paycheck different from this estimate?
Employers withhold with the IRS percentage method and your W-4, not with an annual estimate split into pay periods. Pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k), health insurance or an HSA lower your taxable pay, and bonuses are often withheld at a flat supplemental rate. Over a full year the two should come close; a single check can differ.
