What we assumed
  • Estimated paycheck based on annualized tax liability, not employer payroll withholding.
  • Annual tax is divided across 26 pay periods.
  • This estimate uses tax year 2026.
  • Federal filing status: Single.
  • Federal income tax uses the IRS standard deduction of $16,100.00. Itemized deductions are not used.
  • Federal tax credits, capital gains, self-employment tax and AMT are not included. State exemption credits are included where this snapshot carries them.
  • What a dependent is worth depends entirely on the state, and in several it is worth nothing. The dependents field says so beneath itself when that is the case.
  • Employer benefits and pre-tax payroll deductions are not included.
  • This is an estimate, not a tax return or employer withholding notice.
  • Federal source: IRS Revenue Procedure for tax year 2026.
  • Virginia tax uses Virginia Department of Taxation rules. Schedule year 2025. State-specific credits and most subtractions are not modeled.
  • This state levies no local income tax on wages, so nothing is omitted on that account.

How Virginia taxes a paycheck

Virginia taxes wages in brackets, 2% to 5.75% for a single filer. Each rate applies only to the part of taxable income inside its bracket.

A single filer subtracts a $8,750 standard deduction before the state rate applies.

The personal exemption for a single filer is $930.

$5,000 to $17,0005%$5,000 to $17,000
Over $17,0005.75%Over $17,000

Federal income tax uses the IRS 2026 brackets and standard deduction. Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 a year and Medicare is 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000.

What the Virginia figure includes

  • Virginia taxes Virginia taxable income at 2% of the first $3,000, $60 plus 3% of the excess over $3,000 through $5,000, $120 plus 5% through $17,000, and $720 plus 5.75% above that (2025 Form 760 instructions, tax rate schedule). The same schedule is used for every filing status. Head of household files as single with an oval and uses the single deduction.
  • The 2025–2026 standard deduction is $8,750 filing status 1 or 3 and $17,500 filing status 2 (2025 General Assembly increase). Personal and dependent exemptions are $930 each.
  • If Virginia AGI is less than $11,950 single or married filing separately, or $23,900 married filing jointly, Form 760 says to enter $0 of tax. That floor is modeled; it is not the standard deduction plus exemption, which is a smaller figure.
  • The spouse tax adjustment (up to $259) applies only when both spouses have Virginia AGI. This model has one wage income, so a joint filer does not qualify — matching the worksheet instruction to stop if either spouse's amount is zero.
  • Virginia credits, itemized deductions, the age deduction and locality taxes are not modeled. The starting point is gross wages.

Virginia paycheck questions

How much is taken out of a paycheck in Virginia?

On the Virginia median wage of $55,690 (BLS, May 2025), paid every two weeks, about $428.89 of a $2,141.92 paycheck goes to tax: $173.18 federal income tax, $163.86 Social Security and Medicare, and $91.85 Virginia income tax. That leaves $1,713.03.

This assumes a single filer with the standard deduction and no pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or health premiums, which would lower both the tax and the check.

Does Virginia have a state income tax?

Yes. Virginia taxes wages in brackets, 2% to 5.75% for a single filer. Each rate applies only to the part of taxable income inside its bracket. The rules come from Virginia Department of Taxation.

What is the Virginia income tax rate for 2026?

For a single filer the rates run 2% to 5.75%, using the 2025 schedule, the latest Virginia Department of Taxation had published when these figures were checked. The bracket table on this page shows where each rate starts.

How much is $1,000 a week after taxes in Virginia?

About $803.58 a week, or $41,786 a year, for a single filer with the standard deduction in 2026. Federal income tax takes about $78.08 a week and Social Security and Medicare $76.50; Virginia income tax about $41.85.

Why is my real paycheck different from this estimate?

Employers withhold with the IRS percentage method and your W-4, not with an annual estimate split into pay periods. Pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k), health insurance or an HSA lower your taxable pay, and bonuses are often withheld at a flat supplemental rate. Over a full year the two should come close; a single check can differ.
