  • This estimate uses tax year 2026.
  • Federal filing status: Single.
  • Federal income tax uses the IRS standard deduction of $16,100.00. Itemized deductions are not used.

  • Federal source: IRS Revenue Procedure for tax year 2026.

  • This state levies no local income tax on wages, so nothing is omitted on that account.

How Hawaii taxes a paycheck

Hawaii taxes wages in brackets, 1.4% to 11% for a single filer. Each rate applies only to the part of taxable income inside its bracket.

A single filer subtracts a $8,000 standard deduction before the state rate applies.

The personal exemption for a single filer is $1,144.

Federal income tax uses the IRS 2026 brackets and standard deduction. Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 a year and Medicare is 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000.

What the Hawaii figure includes

  • Hawaii taxes taxable income in twelve brackets from 1.40% to 11.00%. Act 46, SLH 2024 (DOT Announcement 2024-03) keeps the 2025 brackets for tax year 2026 and raises the standard deduction to $8,000 single or married filing separately, $16,000 married filing jointly, $12,000 head of household. The department’s FAQ restated those 2026 amounts on 27 August 2026.
  • Each personal exemption remains $1,144 as a deduction from income (2025 N-11; HRS 235-54). Hawaii did not adopt the federal suspension of personal exemptions.
  • Act 24, SLH 2026 (S.B. 3125) adds a 13% top bracket beginning in tax year 2027, not 2026. 2026 Form N-11 was not published at verification; the 2026 standard deduction is the enacted Act 46 amount and the brackets are the 2025 schedules that Act 46 continues into 2026.
  • The alternative tax on capital gains, the additional exemption for taxpayers 65 and older, Hawaii credits and itemized deductions are not modeled. The starting point is gross wages.

Hawaii paycheck questions

How much is taken out of a paycheck in Hawaii?

On the Hawaii median wage of $56,320 (BLS, May 2025), paid every two weeks, about $437.17 of a $2,166.15 paycheck goes to tax: $176.09 federal income tax, $165.71 Social Security and Medicare, and $95.37 Hawaii income tax. That leaves $1,728.98.

This assumes a single filer with the standard deduction and no pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or health premiums, which would lower both the tax and the check.

Does Hawaii have a state income tax?

Yes. Hawaii taxes wages in brackets, 1.4% to 11% for a single filer. Each rate applies only to the part of taxable income inside its bracket. The rules come from Hawaii Department of Taxation.

What is the Hawaii income tax rate for 2026?

For a single filer the rates run 1.4% to 11%. The bracket table on this page shows where each rate starts.

How much is $1,000 a week after taxes in Hawaii?

About $803.72 a week, or $41,793 a year, for a single filer with the standard deduction in 2026. Federal income tax takes about $78.08 a week and Social Security and Medicare $76.50; Hawaii income tax about $41.71.

Why is my real paycheck different from this estimate?

Employers withhold with the IRS percentage method and your W-4, not with an annual estimate split into pay periods. Pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k), health insurance or an HSA lower your taxable pay, and bonuses are often withheld at a flat supplemental rate. Over a full year the two should come close; a single check can differ.
