Defaults cover the common case: single, no dependents, the current year.

South Carolina allows a second deduction of the same amount for each dependent under six. This estimate has no age input, so it leaves that out and shows more tax than a filer with young children owes.

What we assumed
  • Estimated paycheck based on annualized tax liability, not employer payroll withholding.
  • Annual tax is divided across 26 pay periods.
  • This estimate uses tax year 2026.
  • Federal filing status: Single.
  • Federal income tax uses the IRS standard deduction of $16,100.00. Itemized deductions are not used.
  • Federal tax credits, capital gains, self-employment tax and AMT are not included. State exemption credits are included where this snapshot carries them.
  • What a dependent is worth depends entirely on the state, and in several it is worth nothing. The dependents field says so beneath itself when that is the case.
  • Employer benefits and pre-tax payroll deductions are not included.
  • This is an estimate, not a tax return or employer withholding notice.
  • Federal source: IRS Revenue Procedure for tax year 2026.
  • South Carolina tax uses South Carolina Department of Revenue rules. Schedule year 2026. State-specific credits and most subtractions are not modeled.
  • This state levies no local income tax on wages, so nothing is omitted on that account.

How South Carolina taxes a paycheck

South Carolina taxes wages in brackets, 1.99% to 5.21% for a single filer. Each rate applies only to the part of taxable income inside its bracket.

A single filer subtracts a $15,000 standard deduction before the state rate applies.

Taxable income (single)RateTaxable income (joint)
Up to $30,0001.99%Up to $30,000
Over $30,0005.21%Over $30,000

Federal income tax uses the IRS 2026 brackets and standard deduction. Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 a year and Medicare is 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000.

What the South Carolina figure includes

  • South Carolina has two brackets for tax year 2026: 1.99% below $30,000 of taxable income and 5.21% above it, which the state writes as 5.21% minus $966 (SCDOR Information Letter #26-20; S.C. Code 12-6-510).
  • For 2026 South Carolina decoupled from the federal deductions in IRC 63(b)-(g), so its starting point is federal adjusted gross income rather than federal taxable income. For a wage-only filer that is gross pay.
  • The South Carolina Income Adjusted Deduction replaces the federal standard deduction: $15,000 single and married filing separately, $22,500 head of household, $30,000 married filing jointly. It falls to zero across AGI of $40,000-$95,000, $60,000-$142,500 and $80,000-$190,000 respectively, and the reduction is rounded down to the next lowest $10.
  • The dependent exemption is $4,930 for each dependent claimed on the federal return, subtracted from South Carolina taxable income with no phase-out (2025 SC1040 instructions, worksheet for line w; S.C. Code 12-6-1140(13)). That is the 2025 indexed figure, the latest South Carolina has published; the amount is indexed annually and the 2026 one was not available at verification.
  • South Carolina allows a second deduction of the same amount for each dependent who had not reached age six (S.C. Code 12-6-1160). This estimate has no age input, so it does not apply that doubling and understates the deduction for a filer with young children.
  • The 125% earned income credit capped at $200 and other South Carolina credits are not modeled. The starting point is gross wages.
  • The 5.21% top rate is scheduled to fall in later years when revenue triggers are met; this row is the 2026 schedule as published.

South Carolina paycheck questions

How much is taken out of a paycheck in South Carolina?

On the South Carolina median wage of $46,490 (BLS, May 2025), paid every two weeks, about $297.01 of a $1,788.08 paycheck goes to tax: $130.72 federal income tax, $136.79 Social Security and Medicare, and $29.49 South Carolina income tax. That leaves $1,491.07.

This assumes a single filer with the standard deduction and no pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or health premiums, which would lower both the tax and the check.

Does South Carolina have a state income tax?

Yes. South Carolina taxes wages in brackets, 1.99% to 5.21% for a single filer. Each rate applies only to the part of taxable income inside its bracket. The rules come from South Carolina Department of Revenue.

What is the South Carolina income tax rate for 2026?

For a single filer the rates run 1.99% to 5.21%. The bracket table on this page shows where each rate starts.

How much is $1,000 a week after taxes in South Carolina?

About $823.66 a week, or $42,830 a year, for a single filer with the standard deduction in 2026. Federal income tax takes about $78.08 a week and Social Security and Medicare $76.50; South Carolina income tax about $21.77.

Why is my real paycheck different from this estimate?

Employers withhold with the IRS percentage method and your W-4, not with an annual estimate split into pay periods. Pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k), health insurance or an HSA lower your taxable pay, and bonuses are often withheld at a flat supplemental rate. Over a full year the two should come close; a single check can differ.
