Filing status, dependents and tax year

Defaults cover the common case: single, no dependents, the current year.

Louisiana does not give a per-dependent allowance for 2026: the flat tax enacted by Act 11 of the 2024 Third Extraordinary Session replaced the personal and dependent exemptions with a single combined deduction. Federal credits for dependents are not modelled here either.

What we assumed
  • Estimated paycheck based on annualized tax liability, not employer payroll withholding.
  • Annual tax is divided across 26 pay periods.
  • This estimate uses tax year 2026.
  • Federal filing status: Single.
  • Federal income tax uses the IRS standard deduction of $16,100.00. Itemized deductions are not used.
  • Federal tax credits, capital gains, self-employment tax and AMT are not included. State exemption credits are included where this snapshot carries them.
  • What a dependent is worth depends entirely on the state, and in several it is worth nothing. The dependents field says so beneath itself when that is the case.
  • Employer benefits and pre-tax payroll deductions are not included.
  • This is an estimate, not a tax return or employer withholding notice.
  • Federal source: IRS Revenue Procedure for tax year 2026.
  • Louisiana tax uses Louisiana Department of Revenue rules. Schedule year 2026. State-specific credits and most subtractions are not modeled.
  • This state levies no local income tax on wages, so nothing is omitted on that account.

How Louisiana taxes a paycheck

Louisiana taxes wages at one flat rate, 3% of taxable income, whatever the salary.

The personal exemption for a single filer is $12,875.

Federal income tax uses the IRS 2026 brackets and standard deduction. Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 a year and Medicare is 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000.

What the Louisiana figure includes

  • Louisiana taxes income at a flat 3% from tax year 2025 onward (Act 11 of the 2024 Third Extraordinary Session; RIB 25-012; 2025 IT-540 line 11). The 2026 withholding tables use 3.09%; that is a withholding formula, not the tax rate, so this row keeps 3%.
  • The 2026 standard deduction used in Form R-1306 and RIB 26-005 is $12,875 filing single or separately and $25,750 filing jointly, as a surviving spouse or as head of household. Those are the CPI-U-indexed withholding figures. RIB 26-005 says the official return amounts may differ slightly based on January 2026 CPI-U; no different return figure had been published at verification.
  • The additional exemptions for dependents, blindness and age were repealed, though the deduction for taxpayers 65 and older was raised to $12,000 a person and is not modeled here.
  • Louisiana credits and Schedule E adjustments are not modeled. The starting point is gross wages.

Louisiana paycheck questions

How much is taken out of a paycheck in Louisiana?

On the Louisiana median wage of $45,520 (BLS, May 2025), paid every two weeks, about $297.85 of a $1,750.77 paycheck goes to tax: $126.25 federal income tax, $133.93 Social Security and Medicare, and $37.67 Louisiana income tax. That leaves $1,452.92.

This assumes a single filer with the standard deduction and no pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or health premiums, which would lower both the tax and the check.

Does Louisiana have a state income tax?

Yes. Louisiana taxes wages at one flat rate, 3% of taxable income, whatever the salary. The rules come from Louisiana Department of Revenue.

What is the Louisiana income tax rate for 2026?

Flat 3% of taxable income.

How much is $1,000 a week after taxes in Louisiana?

About $822.85 a week, or $42,788 a year, for a single filer with the standard deduction in 2026. Federal income tax takes about $78.08 a week and Social Security and Medicare $76.50; Louisiana income tax about $22.57.

Why is my real paycheck different from this estimate?

Employers withhold with the IRS percentage method and your W-4, not with an annual estimate split into pay periods. Pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k), health insurance or an HSA lower your taxable pay, and bonuses are often withheld at a flat supplemental rate. Over a full year the two should come close; a single check can differ.
