Cómo lo calculamos
  1. Net profit$50,000.00
  2. Net earnings from self-employmentSchedule SE line 4a: profit × 0.9235$46,175.00
  3. Social Security 12.4%On $46,175.00 of the $184,500.00 wage base$5,725.70
  4. Medicare 2.9%No wage-base cap$1,339.08
  5. Schedule SE tax$7,064.78
  6. Deductible one-halfSchedule SE line 13. Additional Medicare Tax is not deductible$3,532.39
  7. Additional Medicare Tax (Form 8959)Combined Medicare wages and net earnings are not over the $200,000.00 threshold for Single$0.00
Supuestos del cálculo
  • Tax year 2026. Schedule SE Social Security 12.4% and Medicare 2.9% are twice the employee FICA rates in the snapshot, which is how the form is written.
  • Net profit above $0 is multiplied by 0.9235 before the tax. That is Schedule SE line 4a, not a rounded estimate.
  • W-2 Social Security wages of $0.00 reduce the remaining Social Security wage base. They do not reduce Medicare.
  • Form 8959 Additional Medicare Tax uses combined Medicare wages and net SE earnings over the Single threshold. It is not part of Schedule SE and is not included in the deductible half.
  • A filed Schedule SE rounds each line to whole dollars, so this estimate can differ by up to $0.50 per line.
  • Church employee income, the farm and nonfarm optional methods, ministers and Form 4361, Conservation Reserve Program payments, and QBI are not modeled. Omitting an optional method can understate Social Security credits; it does not invent extra tax here.
  • This is self-employment tax only — not income tax on the profit, and not state tax.

  • Net profit is not the tax base. If net profit is above $0, Schedule SE multiplies it by 92.35% before charging tax. That factor is the deductible employer-equivalent half of FICA coming out first. Below $400 of net earnings after that factor, the form is not filed and the tax is $0.
  • Social Security shares a wage base with W-2 wages. Social Security on self-employment is 12.4% of net earnings, but only up to the $184,500 wage base minus Social Security wages already reported on Form W-2. Medicare is 2.9% of all net earnings. Those rates are twice the employee FICA rates in the snapshot, which is how the form is written.
  • Additional Medicare Tax is a different form. Form 8959 charges 0.9% once combined Medicare wages and net SE earnings pass the filing-status threshold. That amount is not on Schedule SE and is not included in the deductible one-half.
  • What is left out. Church employee income, the farm and nonfarm optional methods, ministers and Form 4361, and QBI are not modeled. Income tax on the profit is a separate calculation.
