Three numbers from your syllabus and gradebook answer it: your grade on everything except the final, the grade you want, and how much the final counts. The course grade is current × (1 − w) + final × w, so the final you need is (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w.
You have an 82% going into a final worth 30% of the course, and you want an 85%. The other 70% of the course already contributes 82 × 0.7 = 57.4 points. You need 85 − 57.4 = 27.6 more from the final, and 27.6 ÷ 0.3 = 92%. A perfect final would end the course at 87.4%; a zero would end it at 57.4%.
Above 100% means the target is out of reach without extra credit: even a perfect final lands short, and the page shows where. Zero or below means the grade is already secured, and the page shows what a zero on the final would still leave you with.
Your current grade has to be the grade on the work that is not the final. If your gradebook already folds a placeholder zero for the final into the average, work out the grade without it first. The weighted-grade tab does that from each category’s score and weight.
Needed final = (grade you want − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With an 82% so far, a final worth 30% and a target of 85%, that is (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.3 = 92%.
Check the “course grade with 0% on the final” line: it is your grade if the final scores nothing. If that is at or above the passing mark, the final cannot drop you below it.
